Marlpool Junior School

Maths

At Marlpool junior school we believe that every child is capable of improving their understanding of Mathematics and  becoming a confident Mathematical thinker. Mathematics is taught through a "mastery" approach, which emphasises the importance of noticing connections between all areas of the Maths curriculum and encouraging  children to explain their reasoning.

We use the White Rose scheme for mathematics teaching across our federation.

White Rose uses a mastery approach to maths teaching. This is a research-driven teaching and learning method that meets the goals of the National Curriculum.

What does this look like in practice?

Puts numbers first: The schemes have number at their heart; confidence with numbers is the first step to competency in the curriculum as a whole.

Encourages collaboration: children can progress through the schemes as a group, supporting each other as they learn.

Focuses on fluency, reasoning and problem solving: the scheme gives children the skills they need to become competent mathematicians.

We are proud to be a TTRS Gold school. We use this platform to support our times tables learning. Children can access this online platform at home as well as at school, earning coins that enable them to personalise their rock avatar. They can also move up the leader board all the way from 'New Artist' to 'Rock Hero'!

Confidence in mental arithmetic is the key to being a successful Mathematician. Regular practice in our ability to remember key number bonds and multiplication tables enables us to improve the accuracy of our mental calculations.

Our Mental calculation policy and scheme of work provides examples of these key facts for each year group
