Marlpool Junior School

Year 5/6 Haddon class

Spring Term

In English, we are going to explore ‘A Beautiful Lie’ by Irfan Master. This story is set in India, 1947, an important time historically as it led to the partition of India and Pakistan. The story follows a small boy and his escapades with his friends to tell a lie, for the good of someone else.

This term we are going to be discovering all about The Sikh Empire as part of our History Topic. We will use some of our knowledge gained in our RE lessons last term about the Sikh religion to help us.

Our Reading Journey

This academic year, we have explored a variety of interesting and engaging texts. The children have fully immersed themselves in each story and have gained knowledge and enjoyment from each of them.

We started with ‘Malala – My story of standing up for girls’ rights’, followed by William Shakespeare’s’ The Tempest. These books linked into our History Topic - Power to the People. Later in the term we looked at ‘The Boy who harnessed the wind’, which added to our Geography topic – Where does our Energy come from. We also looked at the story ‘The Winter’s Child’ to gain ideas for our story writing.
